Police offered a £10,000 reward after the former nightclub doorman went on the run.

Moat, 37, shot his former girlfriend, her new partner – who died – and a police officer before vanishing and taunting police.

Northumbria Police offered the reward five days after the first of the shootings in Birtley, near Gateshead, on July 3. They have confirmed a reward has been paid but would not reveal who has received the money or whether they got the full amount.

“The police have paid out a reward regarding the apprehension of Raoul Moat,” a force spokesman said.

Moat shot himself in Rothbury, Northumberland, on July 10 after a six-hour stand-off with armed police.

The chart topper, 25, told reporters that she is three months pregnant.

She said: “It brings me great pleasure to tell you that Sam and I are expecting our first child. It goes without saying that we are both absolutely delighted.”

She told the court in the Netherlands how two men knocked on her door as she stayed at the home of former South African president Nelson Mandela and presented her with a pouch containing gems.

Campbell received the ‘gift’ after a star-studded party hosted by Mr Mandela in South Africa in September 1997. The model said she discussed it with fellow guests the morning after the dinner and was told: “That’s obviously Charles Taylor.”

Campbell is said to have received the “blood diamonds” from the ex-Liberian President, who faces charges including criminal responsibility for murder, rape, sexual slavery and the use of child soldiers.

Campbell said she was told the stones were “probably” diamonds. She “assumed” they were a gift from Taylor, whom she had met for the first time at that night’s event.

“This is someone, I read up on the internet, that has killed thousands of people, supposedly, and I don’t want my family in danger in any way.”

The stones were in her possession for six hours before she gave them to Jeremy Ratcliffe, the former head of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, she said. The model insisted she had wanted them to be donated to charity but said: “He still has them so they didn’t benefit.”

The 40-year-old model from south London, had previously refused to take part in the trial at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague. Campbell described the proceedings as a “big inconvenience” and said she feared they would put her family in danger.

She was asked to identify her fellow guests at the charity dinner. They included Taylor, Jemima and Imran Khan, Mr Mandela and his wife, music producer Quincy Jones and actress Farrow. The court was shown a photograph of the group, in which Campbell stood alongside Taylor.

It comes days ahead of a three-day visit to the UK by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari, during which he is expected to stay with Mr Cameron at his country retreat Chequers.

Pakistan is regarded by UK agencies as a key nation in the fight against terror. Former prime minister Gordon Brown said that 75 per cent of terror plots under investigation in the UK were linked to the country.

Pakistan itself has suffered a wave of terror attacks following the launch of military operations aimed at militants in the north-west frontier regions bordering Afghanistan.

French paramilitary police rescued the unnamed man from his home in the village of Arrou, southwest of Paris, on Wednesday, blinded, malnourished and physically abused by the ordeal at the hands of his own family.

A judicial source told AFP the man was conscious and lucid in hospital but did not yet want to speak to anyone.

“The victim suffered violence and ill-treatment,” local gendarme commander Bruno Arviset told journalists. “The man ate twice a day, mostly pastries that were past their sell-by date.”

His wife, 45, was jailed on Saturday pending trial after being charged with physical abuse, illegal detention and taking advantage of a vulnerable person, a judicial source said.

Her alleged lover and her son have been released on bail after being charged with complicity with kidnapping and failing to report the abuse.

Investigators suspect the man’s family had a financial motive as around 500,000 euros (650,000 dollars) had been taken from the man’s bank accounts in recent months.

Deputy prosecutor Fanny Floquet said that when police arrived at the couple’s home, the wife had initially said that her husband was abroad.

“The wife finally led them to a small room in the house but away from rooms used to live in and opened a locked door in front of the gendarmes,” Floquet told journalists.

Prosecutors said that police were alerted by one of the woman’s young children who has now been taken into care by social services.

The child “said there was an old man at home who was dirty, who stole food and who was abused because in particular he could make (the child’s) mother angry,” Floquet said.

The sleepy village’s inhabitants said they knew the couple.

“The woman was very strange,” a woman inhabitant, who asked not to be named, told AFP. “Some people knew that she had an odd relationship with an old man while at the same time living with a younger man.”

The couple were married while living at their previous home in the nearby village of Droue three years ago, a local official told AFP, also asking not to be named.

“The mayor didn’t want to marry them because he had doubts about the veracity of their union,” the official said. “One of the mayor’s deputies married them.”

“At the time the victim was already living as a recluse in a room in the cellar of their house in Droue,” the official said.

A former neighbour said that “the man never left his house. We saw him outside only once when he went to the town hall to get married, three or four years ago.”

Police said that the last time the man had been seen was at a chemist’s in Arrou in July 2009.

The man’s wife had in April of the same year made a charity appeal in the local press for money to help her partially paralysed daughter, who died of a brain tumour a few months ago.

A worker at local solicitors firm Jacksons said she believed a family lived at the house.

A senior police officer told BBC News he was unaware of a weapon being found and it was unclear how the four died.

Police were called at 1120 BST and a cordon was set up.

‘Big shock’

The senior police officer said the bodies remain in the house while a full search and forensic examination of the house continue.

Eyewitnesses said there were eight police cars and three ambulances at the scene earlier.

Adam Crew, from the Ship Inn pub, said: “I’ve had people coming in talking about it but no-one knows much details about it yet.

“Fordingbridge is just a quiet rural town so this is a big shock for everyone to hear that bodies have been found.”

The sight of hundreds of armed officers searching the countryside for a suspected killer obsessed with shooting police is nothing new. 

In the summer of 1982 officers from across the UK hunted 37-year-old Barry Prudom in North Yorkshire.

Electrician Prudom had killed two police officers and a civilian as well as injuring a number of others when he was finally cornered in the market town of Malton.

Up to 1,000 officers were involved in the search for Prudom, who was an outdoor and military enthusiast. They found him after 18 days with the help of survival expert Eddie McGee – the Ray Mears of his day.

Prudom was found dead after police opened fire on his hideout but a post-mortem examination found he had already killed himself.

Harry Roberts – who shot three policemen dead in 1966 – lasted longer, using his British Army training to hide in Epping Forest, Essex, for three months, before being captured alive.

Scotland Yard has said it is sending 40 specialist firearms officers, armed with Heckler and Koch G36 assault rifles, to help in the search for Raoul Moat, while the Police Service of Northern Ireland has delivered 20 armoured cars.

They will join specialist firearms officers, including snipers armed with high velocity weapons with telescopic sights.

Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson, who is in charge of the manhunt, said investigators believe others have helped Moat evade police “indirectly or otherwise” as the gunman travelled around Northumbria.

He added that two men arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder had helped police with inquiries.

Senior officers are desperate to capture Moat without further injury or loss of life but he has threatened to kill police.

Although police believe Moat remains in or around Rothbury, plans are in place to intercept him anywhere in Northumbria.

Five years on from the terrorist attacks on London’s public transport network, survivors and relatives of victims are to assemble at a series of informal memorial gatherings to remember the day’s events and the passing of loved ones.

52 people were killed when terrorists launched a series of co-ordinated bomb attacks at three London Underground stations and on board a double-decker bus in Tavistock Square.

Transport for London has invited those directly affected by the bombings to mark the time of each attack on the platform of each station.

A permanent memorial to the victims of the bombings, known as the 7/7 attacks, was unveiled last year in Hyde Park.

It features 52 stainless steel columns, representing each of the innocent dead. The pillars are inscribed with the date, time and location of each of the four bombing sites.

British troops will be withdrawn from the Sangin area of Afghanistan later this year, Defence Secretary Liam Fox has told MPs.

He said the UK had agreed to a redeployment which will see US Marines assume responsibility for the area.

The UK will concentrate its effort on the central part of Helmand province instead, in what he said would provide “more manpower and greater focus” on that area.

Dr Fox also said 300 extra British troops from a reserve battalion kept on stand-by in Cyprus would be deployed on a temporary basis until the switchover was complete – likely to be in October.

“The result will be a coherent and equitable division of the main populated areas of Helmand between three brigade-sized forces, with the US in the north and the south, and the UK-led Task Force Helmand, alongside our outstanding Danish and Estonian allies, in the central population belt,” he told the Commons.

It has been the scene of some of the fiercest fighting the British military has endured since the Second World War. Of the 312 UK deaths in Afghanistan since 2001, 99 occurred in Sangin.

Sangin, currently home to 40 Commando Royal Marines, is particularly dangerous because it contains a patchwork of rival tribes and is a major centre of Afghanistan’s opium-growing industry.

Although the withdrawal of British forces has been presented as a purely military decision, there have been warnings that it will be portrayed as a defeat by the Taliban for propaganda purposes.

Prime Minister David Cameron told MPs that 2010 was the “key year” for the mission in Afghanistan and said it was time to “surge up” the military and political pressure.

Repeating his desire to see UK troops home within five years, he said: “We have set out very clearly what we want to achieve in Afghanistan. This is the key year where we surge up the military forces, we surge up political pressure.

“Let me be clear. Do I think that we should be there in a combat role or in significant numbers in five years’ time? No, I don’t.

“This is the time to get the job done and the plan we have envisages making sure that we wouldn’t be in Afghanistan in 2015.”

Fugitive gunman Raoul Moat has written another letter while on the run – this time to his ex-girlfriend, police have revealed

Detective Chief Superintendent Neil Adamson said Moat had been living rough near Rothbury in Northumbria.

The “personal” letter, found in a tent he had been hiding in in a secluded spot, re-asserted his belief that Sam Stobbart’s new partner was a policeman.

DCS Adamson stressed again to Moat that the man, Chris Brown, who was shot dead at the weekend, was not a police officer.

Northumbria’s temporary chief constable Sue Sim said “no stone will be unturned” as she appealed for continued support from the public. She said that while Moat was a dangerous man, officers believe his main target is the police.

Northumbria Police offered a £10,000 reward for information which leads to Moat being captured.

Italian bank chiefs have been left short-changed after motorists coined it in when a bullion van overturned, spilling up to two million Euros (£1.6m) onto a busy motorway.

Drivers and their passengers risked life and limb to make off with close to 50,000 Euros (£45,000) after thousands upon thousands of one and two Euro coins scattered across the lanes.

Bound for Bari, the bullion van spilled its valuable load after bursting a tyre, causing it to hit another car before slamming into a barrier on the A14 motorway, near Foggia in southern Italy.

The accident dislodged the boxes on board which burst open as they hit the ground, paving a vast stretch of the road with gold.

One witness told a local TV station: “I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. People were stopping on the motorway risking their lives to pick up the coins.

“It was a real free-for-all and I am amazed no-one was killed as people were running across the lanes to reach the coins.”

Police said the thirst for the crash cash outweighed compassion for those injured in the collision and disrupted any attempts to contain the costly spillage.

“Our job was made very difficult as the coins had gone onto both carriageways and motorists were stopping and picking up the money,” he said.

“Two drivers in the truck and two in the car were hurt, but no-one was bothered about them. Fortunately they were not too badly hurt.”

Staff from the bullion company were still at the scene using brushes to sweep up coins a day after the collision.

Police have appealed for the public “to return the money to its rightful owners”.

It follows news yesterday that the singer has cancelled all work commitments for this week following advice from doctors.

The ‘X Factor’ judge reportedly collapsed at the weekend during a photo shoot for her new album at a North London studio.

It is believed she contracted the disease during a visit to the east African country of Tanzania last month.

Malaria is transmitted by the bites of infected mosquitoes and symptoms include headaches, fever and vomiting.

If not treated promptly it can become life-threatening.

What is Malaria

Malaria is a tropical disease spread by night-biting mosquitoes. When a mosquito infected with malaria parasites (plasmodia) bites you, it injects the parasites into your body. It only takes a single mosquito bite for you to become infected.

Symptoms can develop as quickly as eight days after being bitten. However, in some cases the parasites can stay inactive in the body and symptoms may not develop for up to a year.

Any type of malaria is dangerous but malaria caused by the falciparum parasite is the most serious. It can develop very rapidly and lead to severe illness and death.

When travelling to high-risk areas, be aware of the symptoms of malaria, such as fever. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any symptoms, even several months after your trip.
Global incidence

Malaria is a huge worldwide problem. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that there were 243 million cases and nearly 1 million deaths from malaria in 2008. Most deaths occur in African countries close to the equator and below the Sahara desert (Sub-Saharan Africa).

Many babies and children die from malaria. WHO estimates that a child dies of malaria every 30 seconds.

Approximately 1,500 travellers return to the UK with malaria every year. In 2008, there were 1,370 cases of malaria reported and six deaths in the UK.

Most of the malaria imported to the UK is caused by the falciparum parasite and is acquired in Africa.

Most UK travellers who catch malaria either do not take any malaria tablets or do not take the right tablets for the part of the world they visit. It is important to visit a travel health clinic or GP surgery for prevention advice before going to an area where there is malaria.

Seven Sisters Cliff, Birling Gap

A mother has plunged to her death from cliffs at the same time her young daughter’s body was found by police at their home.

The woman’s body was found on a beach at the foot of Seven Sisters Cliff, Birling Gap, East Sussex, yesterday afternoon.

At the same time, the body of her daughter was found in a bedroom of their house in Felpham, Bognor Regis, West Sussex.

She was found by police attempting to trace the owner of a car found abandoned at Birling Gap.

A police spokesman said only the mother and the daughter lived at the address and no one else was being sought in connection with the deaths.

Det Ch Insp Nick Sloan, of Sussex Police, said: “This appears to be a tragic series of events.

“Our thoughts are with the family members at this very difficult time who are being supported by police family liaison officers.

“House-to-house inquiries are being conducted to establish the circumstances leading up to the child’s death.”

The spokesman added that post mortem examinations were due to be carried out on the bodies.

He said that the mother and child had not yet been formally identified

Fuel tanker explosion

At least 230 people have been killed when a fuel tanker overturned and exploded in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, unleashing a fire ball that tore through homes and cinemas packed with people watching the World Cup.

Officials said the explosion late on Friday also injured 196 people, adding that the death toll could rise.

They described scenes of devastation in the town of Sange, where houses were burnt and bodies littered the streets.

Some people died while trying to steal fuel leaking from the tanker, but most were killed at home or watching World Cup football in cinemas.

Marcellin Cisambo, governor of South Kivu province, where the incident took place, said the blast occurred when the fuel truck overturned, leaked fuel and then later exploded.

It was not immediately clear what caused the initial accident or later blast, but local people said the truck, which was part of a convoy, stopped when the road seemed to crumble, toppling the vehicle and spilling fuel.

Zac Olumegbon

Five people have been arrested in the relation to a stabbing of a 15-year-old boy in South London.

Zac Olumegbon was stabbed to death in a planned attack by suspected rival gang members as he arrived at school.

Olumegbon, from Brixton Hill, south London, was ambushed by four young men at the gates of Park Campus School in nearby West Norwood.

A second teenager, believed to be 14 years old, was also stabbed in the arm during the incident. A local shopkeeper described how Zac fell into the arms of a teacher after the attack.

Police believe four black males arrived in a car before the attack and a confrontation took place outside the school involving the two victims and the suspects.

Three of those being questioned by murder squad detectives after the incident are believed to be teenagers.

Zac was the 13th teenager to be killed in the capital this year as senior officers pull out all the stops to keep a lid on violence among young people.

Raoul Thomas Moat

A gunman believed to have shot his ex-girlfriend at her home before killing her new lover is now on the run.

Sources said the woman, named locally as Samantha Stobbart, was critically injured when a shot was fired through her living room window.

Moments later her partner left the house only to be struck down around 150ft from the front door.

Miss Stobbart’s relatives told The Sunday Telegraph the 22-year-old had been in an on-off relationship with Moat for six years.

And they said the trainee hairdresser, who has a three-year-old daughter Chanel, was shot twice.

She is now in a critical condition in hospital where she was said to be under armed police guard.

Her half-sister Kelly Stobbart told the News of the World that family members were warned she may not survive.”We don’t think she’ll make it,” the 27-year-old said. “She’s been shot in the chest and stomach, her body’s been ripped apart.”

Northumbria Police are searching for Raoul Thomas Moat, from Newcastle, who was released from Durham prison on Thursday after serving a sentence for assault. The 37-year-old – reportedly a former nightclub bouncer – is understood to have had a previous relationship with Miss Stobbart.

Detectives suggested the attack was motivated by a grudge against the couple.

Emergency services called to scene discovered the man, understood to be Miss Stobbart’s current partner, lying on a grassy area opposite the house in Scafell, Birtley, near Gateshead. He is believed to have been in his late 20s or early 30s. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lets face it, sunburn is never a good look. The news that almost 3,000 people at Glastonbury this year needed to be treated for sunburn, dehydration and heatstroke – despite all the warnings – shows how we Brits have still not learned how to live with the sun.

What causes it?

If your skin gets too much sun, it will burn. It’s the ultraviolet (UV) rays present in sunlight which do all the damage to your skin.

Although both UVA and UVB rays can penetrate the skin, UVB rays affect the top layers of the skin leading to redness, pain and swelling. UVA rays cause the skin to lose its elasticity, leading to premature ageing and leathery skin.

Both types of radiation can cause damage to cellular DNA, which is why being sunburnt also increases your risk of skin cancer.

How to treat it

If you have sunburn, the first thing to do is get out of the sun. There is no quick cure for sunburn, but there are things you

Keep the skin cool

Sunburnt skin is usually red, sore and feels warm when you touch it. You can cool your skin by applying a towel soaked in cool – not cold – water to the sunburnt skin. Or, have a cool shower or bath.

Keep the skin moist

Use a moisturising lotion to keep the skin moist. Aftersun lotions can also help the skin to feel cooler and Calamine lotion can help to soothe any itchiness.

Leave blisters alone

If the skin has blistered, don’t burst them. If you do this, you increase the risk of developing an infection.

Drink plenty of fluids

Drink lots of cold drinks to replace water lost through sweating. Avoid all alcoholic drinks; they will cause you to dehydrate even more.

For the pain

Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken by adults for pain and swelling.

When to see a doctor

If a large portion of your body has been burnt and blistered, you should get it checked out by your GP. This is also true if the sunburn doesn’t improve within a few days or you have severe pain or a fever.

Prevention; don’t let it happen again

Sunburn can be prevented. To be safe in the sun:

• Avoid the sun when it is the most intense, between 11am and 3pm
• Wear a broad rimmed hat and a t-shirt to cover your shoulders
• Wear sunglasses which block both UVA and UVB sunlight
• Use a broad-based sunscreen which protects against both UVA and UVB sunlight, with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or more

A British DJ was sentenced to four years in prison by a Dubai court this week after tests revealed traces of cannabis in his blood. Sure, it’s not exactly legal at home, but FOUR years?!

Do some dirty dancing

It is also an offence in the UAE to drink and drive, no matter how tiny the amount. If you’re arrested on alcohol-related offences you’ll likely be jailed while you await trial and penalties entail hefty jail sentences and large fines.

Drugs are almost always a law breaker, but Dubai is about as far from Amsterdam as you can get. Possession and consumption is treated very seriously in the UAE and – as the British DJ who had no drugs on him recently discovered – possession includes anything in your system, so even if you have a cheeky joint before you get on the Dubai-bound plane and you could end up falling foul of their regulations, and wind up with their mandatory minimum of four years in jail.

Shopping in shorts could attract attention from the authorities – unless you’re on the beach or by the pool, then anything tight, transparent, short or displaying your stomach, shoulders or back if you’re a woman, is considered indecent. More details have emerged about a woman at the centre of a transatlantic probe into an alleged Russian spy ring.

Anna Chapman was one of 11 people arrested amid claims they had been working as secret agents for Russia’s intelligence service, the SVR.

According to reports, the 28-year-old has close ties to London where she lived and worked for five years before allegedly joining the international spy network.

Members were said to have sent information from America back to the Kremlin in a plot that could have come straight out of a James Bond novel. She was arrested by the FBI along with Tracey Lee Ann Foley who allegedly held a fake British passport and worked for the SVR, with the goal of penetrating US government policymaking circles.

The alleged spy ring was involved in long term “deep cover” assignments, the US government said.

Reports suggest she has a masters degree in economics, an expensive flat in New York’s financial district and a successful online estate agency. She is also said to have been married to a British citizen.

Chapman, who is thought to be fluent in Russian and English, was arrested in Manhattan on Monday. But her mother Irina insisted her daughter was not a Russian agent. The 51-year-old said: “Of course I deny that my daughter is a spy. It’s all very shocking to us.”

Officials in Dublin were also investigating claims that a false Irish passport was to be used by a member of the spy ring. The Irish Government said officials had been warned about a link to the so-called “deep cover” operation. Court papers claimed one of the defendants, Richard Murphy, was told by his handlers to travel from the US to Rome where he would be given the forged Irish documents.

A woman who went on a week-long Mediterranean cruise in her friend’s boat developed a syndrome that has left her feeling seasick for nine years.

Jane Houghton, 46, suffers from the rare Mal de Debarqument Syndrome which causes sufferers to feel the effects of bobbing about on a rough sea.

She developed the condition during the trip to Palma, Spain, in June 2001, and struggled to get her land legs back.

Almost a decade later, the mother-of-one said the condition has devastated her life.

Mrs Houghton, from Warrington, Cheshire, said: “It’s a similar sensation to walking on a mattress or a trampoline.

“Everything around me is rocking and rolling. Objects sway about and I’m constantly unbalanced.

“On a good day, it’s like being on a calm sea, but when I get a bad day, I can barely stand.

“When I first got off the boat, we treated it as a bit of a laugh. I went out for dinner and the tables were bobbing about.

“After a couple of weeks, I started to get seriously worried. My doctor thought I could be suffering from motion sickness, and gave me tablets, but nothing helped.

“I was referred for an MRI scan. I was petrified that I had a brain tumour, but when the results came back clear, I convinced myself I was going mad, to the point where I started feeling suicidal. My doctor was baffled.”

Oddly, the only time she stops feeling seasick is when she is travelling on a boat, plane or train.

After months of research, she eventually got a referral to the National Hospital for Neurology in London, where doctors confirmed that she was suffering from her rare condition.

Despite spending months carrying out balance exercises, nothing could relieve her of her symptoms, and experts believe her brain may have “locked” itself into thinking it is constantly in motion.

Professor Yoon-Hee Cha, a neurologist from the University of California, and the world’s leading expert on the condition, said the condition was very rare.

She added: “Mal de Debarquement Syndrome is an under-recognised disorder, for which there is no cure.

“It can be devastating to the patients, usually women, who are often in the prime of their lives.

“Neurologists believe it is caused by an abnormality in the brain, but we will not know exactly what that abnormality is until we can fund and carry out further research.”

England fans were dismayed and angry Sunday after their team crashed out of the World Cup following a heavy defeat by old foes Germany, as the media lamented the side’s “humiliation”.

Much of the anger was directed at match officials for disallowing a clear England goal, but even the most die-hard fans conceded the side was outclassed by their arch-rivals.

The press also slammed the referee’s missing of what seemed to be such an obvious goal but said that did not let England off the hook for such a poor performance.

“England suffer World Cup humiliation at hands of arch-rivals Germany (with a LOT of help from a Uruguayan referee),” said the Daily Mail.

“Bungling match officials shamefully failed to spot a Frank Lampard equaliser,” said the Sun, but added that England were “totally outplayed for the bulk of the match.”

England have been knocked out of the 2010 World Cup in the second round, after a rampant Germany side ran out 4-1 victors in Bloemfontein. 

The Germans went two-nil in front through Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolski, before Matthew Upson headed home his second international goal to bring England back into the match.

The talking point of the game saw England being denied an equalising goal just minutes after, when a Frank Lampard shot from 20 metres hit the crossbar before bouncing down over the line.

The British Aerosol Manufacturers’ Association and Local Authority Waste and Recycling Magazine announced Trafford as the winner of the Can Do Awards 2010 on June 16 for the best recycling campaign.

Trafford Council has beaten its recycling target by 10 per cent and at 44 per cent, the borough has the highest recycling rate in Greater Manchester.

A year after Michael Jackson’s death caused a worldwide outpouring of shock, tears and tributes, the anniversary of his passing was marked on a quieter scale as fans remembered their fallen King of Pop with vigils, prayer and, of course, music.

At Jackson’s final resting place at Forest Lawn in Glendale, California, hundreds of fans, some weeping, filed past barricades this morning to get close to the mausoleum where Jackson is interred. Some carried bouquets while others were armed with cameras to document the moment.

Four spectators at Wimbledon have been arrested after a confrontation with a player which led to him spitting at the crowd and storming off court.

Jody, of Upton Drive, won a bumper holiday prize when she attended the Air Mauritius Roadshow at the Renaissance Hotel in Manchester.

A 16-year-old boy has been reprimanded for shining a laser pen at a police helicopter to distract the pilot.

The youngster was given the formal reprimand after admitting that he shone the light at the aircraft when he was caught in Crabtree Place, Cheltenham, at 2.45am on Tuesday.

Sergeant Mark Stephens, from Gloucestershire Police, said: “Shining lasers at aircraft or vehicles is incredibly dangerous and could have very serious consequences.

“This incident shows that those responsible for this sort of senseless activity can and will be found.

“This person now has a criminal record, but more importantly understands the potentially serious consequences of his actions.”

Apple’s latest offering is slimmer and more powerful than its predecessor and features the new OS 4 operating system as standard – making multi-tasking third party apps possible for the first time.

The smartphone offers a higher-resolution display, larger battery, video calling and the ability to record and view high-definition video.

Apple has also installed an oil-resistant glass screen to stop grubby fingers smearing the display.

The company’s UK flagship store in Regent Street, London, opened its doors early at 7am to allow fans who had camped overnight to be the first to get their hands on the phone.

The iPhone 4 had been unveiled earlier this month by CEO Steve Jobs who said it represented “the biggest leap since the original iPhone“.

He added: “FaceTime video calling sets a new standard for mobile communication, and our new Retina display is the highest resolution display ever in a phone, with text looking like it does on a fine printed page.

“We have been dreaming about both of these breakthroughs for decades.”

Mobile phone expert Ernest Doku, from review site Omio.com, reckons the handset will live up to the hype.

He said: “The design team at Apple has truly surpassed itself with the iPhone 4 – a super slim version of the 3GS with a whole lot more oomph under the bonnet.

“On visual design alone, it’s time to trade in the 3GS.”

But others fear it will squeeze smaller firms out of the market.

Luke Peters of T3 magazine said: “One company in particular fearing the arrival of the iPhone 4 will be Flip, creators of pocket-sized HD camcorders.

“With the latest iPhone touting a HD-capable, 720p video recorder of its own, Flip will be worried about its portable HD camcorders becoming less attractive to consumers looking to replace their tech arsenal with a single, all-encompassing device.

“This ‘iPhone effect’ of a single convergence device replacing the need for several, separate pieces of kit has already become a concern for companies since the arrival of the original Apple smartphone in 2007.”

The new handset replaces the iPhone 3GS which launched a year ago and sold over a million units in its first weekend.

However, Apple’s most recent hit has been the iPad tablet computer. Over three million iPads have sold since its US launch less than three months ago.

Apple says it has already taken over 600,000 pre-orders for the new iPhone – the most it has ever taken in a single day.

But the new iPhone is facing competition as the next generation of Android-based phones are unveiled.

Droid X goes on sale in the UK on July 15, with Motorola attempting to win sales from Apple.

More than 160,000 handsets that use the Android operating system developed by Google are sold everyday.

24 Prunes
12 rashers Streaky Bacon
12 small slices Toast
50g (2oz) Mango Chutney
Butter
1 bunch Watercress

Pre-heat oven to 200°C: 400°F: Gas 6
Soak the prunes in boiling water or tea for at least 30 minutes, then remove the stones.
Stuff each prune with ½ tsp mango chutney.
De-rind and stretch the bacon with the back of a knife to prevent it shrinking, cut each rasher in half.
Wrap a piece of bacon round each prune.
Place on a baking tray.
Keep them packed up tight so that they don’t come apart (alternatively pierce with a cocktail stick to prevent this).
Bake for about 8 minutes.
Butter the toast.
Arrange 2 devils on each piece and garnish the dish with the watercress.

According to The Sun, ‘Coronation Street’ producers are currently working on a storyline that would see her return to the cobbles later this year, before her on-screen husband Jack bows out from the soap this December.

Rescuers found on Monday the wreckage of a crashed plane carrying an Australian mining tycoon and other executives, with ten bodies found so far, Cameroonian and Congolese officials said. 

The plane carrying 11 people including tycoon Ken Talbot and the entire board of the Sundance Resources mining company went missing over the jungle Saturday on a flight from Yaounde, Cameroon’s capital, to Yangadou in Congo-Brazzaville.

“Ten bodies have been taken out of the wreckage. The search is continuing for the last,” Alphonse Pepa of the Congolese Transport and Civil Aviation ministry told AFP.

“The decision on where the bodies will be taken will be made tomorrow (Tuesday),” he said.

Congolese civil aviation chief Michel Ambendet said the plane had been found at Dima, an area around 30 kilometres (20 miles) from Yangadou.

Six Australians, two British, two French and one US national were on the twin turboprop Casa C212 plane, which had been chartered by Sundance.

Cameroonian Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary confirmed that the wreckage was found in Congo and earlier said there were no survivors, but later said that rescuers had yet to recover all the bodies.

The French military had earlier joined the frantic search in thick forest on the Cameroon-Congo border, while Congo-Brazzaville authorities said they would call on pygmy tribesmen to join the hunt.

Fog over the jungle hampered efforts to locate the plane using two Cameroon government helicopters along with a French military C-160 transporter and Cougar helicopter.

Australian, American and Canadian officials had also been said to be helping.

Sundance’s ex-chairman, George Jones, said the board had shared the flight as Talbot’s private jet was unable to land on the airstrip at Yangadou, a remote mining town where only small planes can land.

“It’s unusual for an entire board. It actually breaches corporate governance and obviously relates to the fact they could only get on one plane,” Jones told Fairfax Radio.

Sundance, an iron ore miner, halted its African operations and had ordered staff to help find the plane carrying Talbot, whose fortune is estimated at 965 million Australian dollars (840 million US dollars) by BRW business magazine.

Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd had expressed his concern on Monday.

Ground controllers lost contact with the plane shortly after it took off from Yaounde. As well as Talbot, the four other members of the Sundance board, Geoff Wedlock, Don Lewis, Craig Oliver and John Carr-Greg, were on the plane.

Natasha Flason Brian, a French woman based in Australia who worked for Sundance, a consultant and a British citizen and the British pilot were also on board.

Trading in Sundance shares was halted and chief financial officer Peter Canterbury was named acting chief executive.

“This is a deeply distressing time for the families of the missing, their friends and work colleagues,” Canterbury said.

Reports said Talbot, a truck driver’s son, first made his fortune through a network of pubs before founding mining company Macarthur Coal. He left Macarthur over corruption charges and was due to go on trial in August.

Company chairman Wedlock was an ex-head of BHP Billiton’s iron ore division, while Flason Brian was an executive with Talbot’s resources investment company, Talbot Group.

Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said Australia’s High Commissioner to Nigeria had been sent to Cameroon along with two other officials.

A tornado has torn through the US state of Montana damaging business and ripping the roof odd a sports stadium.

The twister struck as a big storm system with golf ball-sized hail passed through the area.

After running through Main Street in the city’s northeast area, the twister quickly moved toward the 10,000-seat Rimrock Auto Arena about a half-mile away, where it hovered for about 15 minutes, snapping trees and telephone poles.

The tornado was caught on tape with the pictures showing large amounts of debris flying through the air.

Big pieces of metal were left hanging from power lines near the arena, and tangles of insulation and metal debris were strewn for hundreds of yards in the surrounding industrial area.

There were several employees inside the arena when it struck, but there were no reports of injuries, police said, adding that there had been no reported deaths and no-one reported missing.

Floods following heavy rain have killed at least 175 people in southern China with more than 100 still missing.

Torrential downpours have triggered flash floods, inundating crops, disrupting traffic and telecommunications and forcing the evacuation of more than 1 million people, according to Ministry of Civil Affairs figures.

The country’s disaster relief departments have raised the emergency response level as more rainfall is forecast in the coming days.

Aly was granted a restraining order against 25-year-old Ceasar Brantley several months before he was arrested outside of her home earlier this week on suspicion of stalking.

Aly had previous encounters with the guy dating back several months — and in her original request for a restraining order, filed on March 1 in L.A. County Superior Court, Aly claims Ceasar “is an obsessed fan trying to come to my house to marry me.”

She also notes that Ceasar has critical information about her life … including the name of the pet cemetery where she buried her pets.

Now, Ceasar has been charged with felony stalking and several misdemeanor counts of violating the restraining order. He’s due back in court on Monday.

Katherine Jackson says Michael Jackson’s kids are isolated and miss their father desperately … this according to her first interview since MJ’s death.

Katherine tells the Daily Mirror, “They don’t have any friends. They don’t go to school, they have private lessons at home — but that will change in September, when they are due to enroll at private college.”

According to the interview, the kids spend hours listening to their dad’s music.

She says Paris has turned her bedroom into a shrine to her “Daddy” and that Prince and Blanket talk often about trying to make him proud.

Katherine says she wanted to decorate Paris’ room with pictures of flowers or ballerinas — but “Paris went into a closet and she brought out seven or eight pictures of Michael, and she told me, ‘No, I want daddy hanging in my room’. So she goes to bed looking at him and wakes up looking at him. She said, ‘I always want to be able to see him.’”

Michael’s mom goes on to say Paris is the most musically-inclined of the three and that Prince wants to produce movies.

This new interview comes days before the anniversary of Michael’s death … and in conjunction with a new book Katherine is selling (pictured above) containing pictures and Katherine’s memories of Michael.

She says, “Michael was so misunderstood … I treasure my memories of him and wanted to share them with his fans in my book. I remember when he brought gifts for me — a watch, a necklace and a ring. I’ll never forget how he smiled when I opened each one. He was so generous. I want the world to know that real Michael Jackson — a loving person.”

A team of scientists and divers for 20 days has been monitoring the world’s third largest coral reefs at Florida’s Dry Tortugas islands for signs of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill. Verdict: so far, so good.

“We didn’t find any trace of the oil spill, that’s the good news, but we’ll have to keep our fingers crossed,” said University of Miami coral expert Jerald Ault.

Ault headed a team of 25 scientists who made 1,700 dives combing the fragile coral reefs at Dry Tortugas National Park for signs of oil pollution damage.

The coral reefs stretching beyond the Key West islands at the tip of Florida are the third largest in the world behind Australia and Belize and a mecca for divers and fishing enthusiasts from around the world.

They face the Gulf of Mexico on one side, and scientists worry the massive oil slick oozing for the past two months from a damaged BP oil well could reach the Loop Current and spread beyond offshore Louisiana to southern Florida and up the eastern seaboard of the country.

“The loop current might bring some oil and if that occurs it would be certainly a bad thing for the corals,” Ault said.

“It is hard to imagine something worse,” said Billy Causey, regional director for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

However, Causey believes there is no cause for concern.

“It is highly unlikely that the Keys will see a sheen or liquid form of any oil” from the Gulf of Mexico spill, he said.

Even so, just the thought of tar balls and oil slicks washing over shorebirds on the seven islands that make up the Dry Tortugas, makes National Park Service chief biologist David Hallac shudder.

“The magnificent frigatebirds and sooty terns that nest on the beaches are some of the main concern,” he said, adding that other animals were also at risk.

“Four hundred sea turtle nest per season on the beach,” the biologist said.

Rotten eggs are off-putting at the best of times – and now scientists believe the same chemical that causes the awful smell may have held back the evolution of life.

Oceans polluted by hydrogen sulphide could explain why it took so long for life to develop on Earth.

Around two billion years ago, deeper layers of the oceans contained high levels of the rotten egg chemical and little oxygen.

The smelly poison would have placed a big obstacle in the path of biological evolution, say scientists.

Study leader Dr Simon Poulton, from the University of Newcastle, said: “It has traditionally been assumed that the first rise in atmospheric oxygen eventually led to oxygenation of the deep ocean around 1.8 billion years ago.

“This assumption has been called into question over recent years, and here we show that the ocean remained oxygen-free but became rich in toxic hydrogen sulphide over an area that extended more than 100 kilometres from the continents.

“It took a second major rise in atmospheric oxygen, around 580 million years ago, to oxygenate the deep ocean. This has major implications as it would have potentially restricted the evolution of higher life forms that require oxygen, explaining why animals appear so suddenly relatively late in the geological record.”

Oxygen began to fill the Earth’s atmosphere for the first time between 1.8 billion and 2.4 billion years ago, rising from nothing to about 5% of present levels. But scientists have not been clear about what happened to oxygen in the oceans – a vital part of life’s evolutionary jigsaw.

Early life first emerged in the oceans almost four billion years ago but did not progress beyond the stage of primitive single cells for nearly three billion years. Big Brother housemates have failed their Humpty Dumpty themed endurance task, breaking too many rules as one team pelted the other with eggs.

But the two groups cracked a smile when a generous Big Brother informed them they could all attend a party later, despite rebelling against the conditions of the task.

Housemates were earlier split into two teams, with Shabby, Caoimhe, Ife, Nathan, John James and Govan donning their Humpty Dumpty suits to perch on a wall.

Ben, Corin, David, Josie, Mario and Steve were chosen as all the Queen’s horses and all the Queen’s men.

Whenever Big Brother played the nursery rhyme, they collected a bucket of eggs from the store room and threw them at their Humpty Dumpty housemates, attempting to knock them from the wall.

Sunshine had an egg allergy so took on the role of Queen, urging them on.

Big Brother directed that if three or more Humpty Dumptys remained sitting by the end of four hours, they could attend a party at the expense of their rivals.

By the end of the task, both teams had flouted various rules governing the challenge, including the Humpty Dumptys smoking while on the wall, Govan climbing off it and costumes being taken off.

Earlier, Shabby confided in Ife that she liked Caoimhe, who replied she should tell her or risk feeling awkward.

Last week, Westminster’s new independent finance watchdog, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR), slashed HM Treasury’s pre-election economic growth forecasts and revised public borrowing estimates.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers’ chief economist in Northern Ireland, Esmond Birnie, said the OBR forecasts suggest Chancellor George Osborne could be looking at tax increases or public spending cuts worth at least £24 billion a year until the end of the current parliament in 2015.

“The OBR has cut growth forecasts and says that UK structural borrowing will be nearly £1bn more than Alistair Darling’s forecast in the March Budget,” Mr Birnie said.

“Lower growth, higher borrowing and a £156 billion deficit means even greater pressure to cut public spending in England and in the devolved regions.

“With swinging public sector spending cuts on his Budget radar, the Chancellor must be careful with regions like Northern Ireland that are heavily reliant on public expenditure.”

He said he hoped Mr Osborne will soften the impact of spending cuts on Northern Ireland and the Executive, by offering tax breaks or incentives to encourage private sector growth and investment.

“Regardless of how the Chancellor treats the regions, this is going to be the toughest Budget in a generation,” he added.

Last month the Chancellor announced £6.2 billion of public spending cuts as part of his plan to take “urgent action” to address the UK’s £156 billion budget deficit, while last week he announced he was scrapping £2 billion of projects approved under Labour.

The immediate impact of the £6.2 billion of savings was a £128 million cut in the Executive’s budget.

Britain will be on “the road to ruin” without painful spending cuts and tax rises in the Budget, Chancellor George Osborne has warned.

Mr Osborne will unveil on Tuesday what is expected to be the harshest set of economic measures seen in decades in a bid to tackle the UK’s record deficit.

Labour said the Government’s determination to go “further and faster” with austerity measures was “profoundly misguided” and would “crush” the fragile recovery.

But Mr Osborne insisted it was unavoidable given the state of the nation’s finances – promising measures would be “tough…but fair”.

He said the package – which has been signed off by senior Government figures from both coalition parties – would set the framework for the next five years.

Asked just how bad the Budget measures would be, he said: “I do not see it as badness – I see it as decisive action to deal with Britain’s record budget deficit.

“We sit here as the country in Europe with the largest budget deficit of any major economy at a time when markets and investors and businesses look around the world at countries that can’t control their debts.

“We have got to deal with that. In that sense it is an unavoidable Budget.”

“Enough is enough. My wife is going to sue,” Eric Woerth said in an interview with several French media after a Socialist lawmaker suggested the minister’s wife had helped Bettencourt commit tax fraud.

Woerth’s wife Florence managed part of Bettencourt’s financial affairs from 2007 until earlier this year and her ties to the 87-year-old L’Oreal heiress have come under scrutiny following reports of the secret tapes.

The conversations — transcripts of which have been obtained by the Mediapart website and Le Point weekly — reveal that Bettencourt allegedly conspired to evade taxes, hiding money in Swiss bank accounts while making big donations to the governing UMP party.

The tapes were secretly recorded by Bettencourt’s former butler and have brought a new twist to a legal saga between the billionaire and her daughter who charges that her mother is no longer fit to manage the family fortune.

Socialist deputy Arnaud Montebourg at the weekend suggested that Woerth, formerly the budget minister, should step down to allow the “truth to be known” about Bettencourt’s financial dealings.

“It seems to me that it would be extremely difficult for Eric Woerth to stay at his post in a government that has made dismantling tax havens a priority,” said Montebourg.

“We had a budget minister who was also a treasurer for the UMP and whose wife worked to help Mrs Bettencourt with her tax fraud,” said Montebourg.

Woerth shot back that he had become a “target” of the opposition because he is in charge of the government’s delicate pensions reform and said his wife was an “employee, not a manager” of the firm that helps manage her fortune.

French police last week questioned the ex-butler and a computer expert over the tapes recorded between May 2009 and May 2010 in Bettencourt’s villa in the posh Paris suburb of Neuilly-sur-Seine.

The scandal over butler’s tapes erupted just two weeks before a photographer is to go on trial to answer charges from Bettencourt’s daughter that he took advantage of her elderly mother when he accepted lavish gifts from her.

The photographer, Francois-Marie Banier, received masterpiece paintings, cash and insurance policies worth one billion euros (1.24 billion dollars) from Bettencourt.

According to the Mediapart website, the recordings reveal that Bettencourt hid some 80 million euros in Swiss bank accounts that her financial adviser planned to move following a Franco-Swiss tax cooperation accord.

A 13-year-old girl has lost several teeth and was knocked unconscious after being hit in the face with a brick in west Belfast. 

She was sitting with friends in a playpark in Moyard Park shortly after midnight on Saturday when they were attacked by a group of youths.

The attackers threw stones and bricks at the teenagers. The girl was taken to hospital and needed 14 stitches.

Police said a possible sectarian motive is being investigated.

A man and his six-year-old son have been shot dead in a California restaurant by a relative who then took his own life. 

The man’s wife and another son, reported to be five years old, were also shot several times but survived.

They are said to be in a critical condition in hospital.

Police said the 58-year-old gunman, named as Jimmy Schlager, was the wife’s stepfather.

He walked into the chain restaurant Del Taco in the city of San Bernardino armed with two semi-automatic weapons and headed straight for the young family who were enjoying lunch.

After blasting the 33-year-old man and his family, the gunman then shot himself in the head.

The incident was witnessed by five other diners and members of staff who told police the gunman made his way straight to the family’s table and said something before opening fire.

“This is just a terrible tragedy,” said police spokesman Lieutenant Jarrod Burguan.

“A whole family? In my 18 years here I don’t recall anyone ever coming and walking in a public place like a restaurant and shooting like this. We haven’t had anything like this a long, long time.”

The names of the victims have not been released, although police revealed Schlager has a long criminal history dating back to 1972.

Charges against him include theft and assault with deadly weapons. Someone, not the stepdaughter, also took out a restraining order against him in 2006.

Little is known about the gunman’s relationship with his 29-year-old stepdaughter whose mother apparently died several years ago.

On a day like any other, all of Earth is shocked with the arrival of large alien spacecraft that appear over major cities. With the signing of a treaty and the opening of diplomatic relations, the Visitors are formally granted entry to the United States. Anna sees a potential problem as the leader of the anti-Visitors movement, whose husband was killed the day they arrived, seems to be getting a lot of public sympathy and support. Erica and Father Jack Landry try to identify who might have been involved in the warehouse killings but unbeknown to her, her FBI partner Dale survived and is being treated aboard the mother ship. When threats of assassination are made against the Visitors, Erica finds herself being assigned to protect them. It also becomes apparent that the Visitors are manipulating virtually everyone around them. Erica’s son Tyler invites Lisa home but his Mom shows up at an inopportune moment. Season 1, Episode 4: It’s Only the Beginning

The Visitors continue to try and win favor with the population, this time by announcing that they will share their medical knowledge. Not only are they sharing advanced medical scanning techniques but they announce they will make available to all a new supercharged vitamin treatment. Erica, Jack and fifth columnist Ryan Nichols learn that they are in fact putting a drug in regular flu shots. Meanwhile, Anna agrees with Lisa that Erica’s son Tyler is exactly the person they want for their future plans. Having successfully torched the warehouse containing the the Visitor’s supply of R6, the Visitor security officer has already attacked Father Jack and is now after Erica. She also decides to try and recruit Kyle Hobbes, a soldier of fortune and weapons expert, who has is wanted by the FBI, to train them into a fighting force. Ryan is concerned about Valerie’s pregnancy, particularly since Visitors and Humans were supposedly unable to procreate. Valerie is worried about the pregnancy and wants to see a doctor right away. Erica is worried about Tyler who is spending a night aboard the Visitors’ spaceship. He is still enamored with them – and Lisa in particular – but it is clear that Anna is looking for something specific in his memories that will bind Tyler to them. Anna is also worried that Chad hasn’t taken up their offer of treating his aneurysm and sets the wheels in motion to get him on their side. Anna also decides that they need soldiers immediately and since the Visitors’ army won’t arrive for some time, she decides to make one.

Season 1, Episode 6: Pound of Flesh

Anna believes she has found a way to identify fifth columnists: they are acquiring human emotions and can be screened for them. They start by checking everyone on board the mother ship. The Visitors announce that humans will be allowed to live aboard one of their 29 ships. Kyle Hobbes convinces Erica, Ryan and the others that they have to let Anna know they’re there and that they are a threat. Ryan is increasingly concerned about Valerie’s pregnancy which is advancing at a rapid pace. He has to decide whether to tell her what is going on but in the short term has to go on board the mother ship to get medicine or Valerie will not survive the pregnancy.

Season 1, Episode 7: John May
Original Air Date—13 April 2010
With Georgie a prisoner aboard the Visitors’ mother ship, Erica and the others decide that they have to locate John May, the fifth columnist who founded the resistance but disappeared some 10 years ago when the aliens tried to retrieve and stop him. They visit the missing man’s stepson James and learn something interesting. Ryan reveals what happened all those years ago. Lisa’s visit with Tyler catches his dad Joe by surprise and he pushes Erica to tell him about the reason they broke up. Valerie is worried about her pregnancy when the baby starts kicking and discovers something interesting in their closet. Anna uses Chad to promote the live aboard program but he quickly realizes she is selecting people according to a specific profile.

Season 1, Episode 8: We Can’t Win

Chad and Anna are in Geneva, Switzerland for the U.N. Energy Summit, where Anna is going to present a gift of technology to the world. Meanwhile, Erica learns that the V Task Force is investigating The Fifth Column, and Valerie goes on the run, knowing something is different about her baby and not sure she can trust Ryan.

Season 1, Episode 9: Heretic’s Fork

With the sniper under their control, Erica wants him to reveal the location of the hard drive with the names of the fifth columnists. Kyle is prepared to do whatever is necessary to get the information but Father Jack is somewhat reticent. Ryan tells Valerie the truth about himself. She is disbelieving and finds it incredible he has kept this from her all of this time. Tyler is told he’s qualified for the live aboard program but is worried about his mom’s reaction. Lisa drops in for a visit but has surprising advice for him when she sees Erica’s reaction. Anna learns of Valerie’s pregnancy and instructs their top doctors to find out how it happened. She also dispatches a V soldier, the first of its kind to set foot on Earth, to locate her. Chad undergoes his surgery but later approaches Father Jack for information about the fifth column.

Season 1, Episode 10: Hearts and Minds

Joshua informs Ryan that Anna will be dispatching a shuttle full of trackers to locate and eliminate fifth columnists. He, Father Jack and Kyle decide to shoot it down before it lands. Not all is as it seems however and it’s all part of Anna’s plan to discredit the fifth column. There’s more to the live aboard program that meets the eye. Chad is still carrying on his facade of concern about the Vs and sympathy for the fifth columnists. Father Jack lets something slip but he has a crisis of faith when he thinks they have taken innocent lives. Erica discovers something interesting about the remains in the wreckage. Anna make a dramatic – and manipulative – announcement.

Season 1, Episode 11: Fruition

In the aftermath of the downed shuttle, Anna continues to manipulate human emotions and arranges for one of the Vs to be badly beaten and then left in alley. She announces that they no longer feel safe on Earth and will therefore leave leading to an outcry and world-wide support for them to stay. As part of her plan, Anna ensures that the attackers are identified, once again framing Kyle Hobbes for the attack. The second attacker is identified as Paul Kendrick, a government scientist who mysteriously disappeared from his job several weeks before. He had been working with others on a project and may have inadvertently developed a weapon against the Vs. Kyle meanwhile seems to be playing both sides of the fence and makes an offer to the Visitors.

Season 1, Episode 12: Red Sky
Original Air Date—18 May 2010
Erica decides they need to make a statement about their opposition to the Vs. They decide to go aboard the mother ship and destroy Anna’s eggs which are about to hatch and produce her army of warriors. She has an opportunity to get aboard the spacecraft when Tyler once again raises the issue of joining the live aboard program and Anna and Lisa invite them for dinner. Father Jack makes his opposition to the Vs known, much to Father Travis’ dismay. Chad Decker once again plays a part in exposing a fifth columnist but comes to the realization that Anna has been using him. Kyle learns why the Vs have framed him. After the attack, Anna has a surprising reaction and takes swift action.

Daniel Radcliffe is desperate to land a role in hit TV show Glee so he can show off his newly-acquired singing and dancing skills

The Harry Potter star has signed up to appear in a production of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on Broadway next year, and he’s been busy preparing for the role by taking dance classes and vocal lessons.

Radcliffe admits he dreams of joining the cast of Glee, but he might need some more practise first.

He tells Access Hollywood, “Yes, absolutely (I want a role in Glee)… Of course… it’s an amazing show and I (would) obviously be honoured to be asked. But, I’m not sure I’m ready for that yet. They’ve got standards like (Glee star) Kristin Chenoweth.”

A frustrated Wayne Rooney reacted to boos from his own fans as he trudged off the pitch following England’s disappointing goalless draw with Algeria.

England were dismally poor in their second Group C game, which leaves them on two points with Slovenia to play on Wednesday. Slovenia have four points after their 2-2 draw with the USA, who have two. Algeria are on one.

Rooney was particularly ineffective as he stretched his barren scoring run for his country to 10 hours of football.

The dire performance prompted some sections of the travelling England support to boo their team as they left the pitch.

Rooney reacted and turned to say to the television cameras: “It’s nice to see your own fans booing you.”

Algeria, who had looked nervous in their opening 1-0 defeat by Slovenia, were good value for their draw and for long spells looked the sharper of the two teams.

England’s final game against Slovenia is in Port Elizabeth while Algeria take on the USA in Pretoria, both on June 23.

If England win their last match they would go through, still possibly as group winners. A high-scoring draw could also be enough if the other game finished level.

A 20-year-old man has admitted killing his younger brother

Daniel Taylor pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of nine-year-old Jack Taylor but denied a charge of murder.

Jack was stabbed at a house on Rookes Avenue, Bradford, in February.

The young boy was taken to Bradford Royal Infirmary but died as a result of multiple stab wounds.

Taylor, of Richardson Avenue, Bradford, also denied wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm after his 18-year-old sister Rachel was injured in the attack.

He entered the pleas at Bradford Crown Court on Friday.

Simon Bourne-Arton QC, prosecuting, said the Crown did not accept Taylor’s guilty plea to manslaughter and the case was adjourned for a further hearing at Leeds Crown Court at a later date.

A preliminary trial date is fixed for September 13.

Taylor appeared in the dock wearing a grey sweatshirt, grey tracksuit bottoms and with short, blond hair.

He repeatedly looked across at family members, who sat in the public gallery to listen to the proceedings, and spoke only to confirm his name, enter his pleas and query the date of the next hearing.

A firing squad has shot a convicted killer in Utah in only the third US execution by that means since 1976.

Ronnie Lee Gardner, 49, was sentenced to death for killing a lawyer in 1985 while trying to flee a court, where he was facing charges over a barman’s murder.

He chose to be executed by firing squad before the method was banned by Utah State and replaced by lethal injections.

Gardner’s last hope for a reprieve was dashed when the US Supreme Court denied his 11th-hour appeal.

As the execution neared, the condemned man was strapped to a black metal chair and hooded, before a target was placed on his chest.

Five executioners fired .30 calibre rifles at him, although one of the weapons carried a blank bullet.

The method allowed members of the firing squad to retain some doubt over whether or not they shot a fatal round.

The killer had eaten his last meal of steak, lobster tail, apple pie, vanilla ice cream and 7UP soda on Thursday, having chosen to fast for his remaining time.

Utah attorney general Mark Shurtleff announced that he had approved the execution on micro-blogging site Twitter.

“I just gave the go ahead to corrections director to proceed with Gardner’s execution,” Mr Shurtleff tweeted shortly before Gardner was shot.

“May God grant him the mercy he denied his victims.”

Like all other US states where the death penalty is in use, Utah now uses lethal injection as its primary means of putting a condemned man to death.

Only Oklahoma still offers the firing squad as an alternative.

Salt Lake City bishop John Wester said: “I find it barbaric. If you’re going to do the death penalty, lethal injection would be the more humane way.

“(A firing squad) emblazons in our consciousness the violence that guns wreck on our lives.”

Sinking land has developed into a huge 80-metre diameter hole on a school playground in Ningxiang county, Hunan province in southern China.

Cracked and damaged buildings could be seen around the sinkhole.

The land started to yield in January this year and formed a 20-diameter hole and since then the hole has been expanding as the land kept sinking.

The sinking was accelerated during the rain season as intense rainfall loosened the earth, a local official told CCTV.

The official said families living in nearby buildings were evacuated and had received a subsidy of 300 Yuan.

Perez Hilton has found himself at the centre of a celebrity scandal after he posted a fake and compromising image of Miley Cyrus on Twitter.

The celebrity blogger posted a picture of the 17-year-old Disney star on the social networking site in which she appeared to have no underwear on while climbing out of a car, although other pictures taken of her at the time clearly show she was in fact wearing knickers. Perez claims the picture, which has since been removed, was obviously fake and he posted it to demonstrate Miley was exiting the vehicle in an “unladylike fashion”.

Perez has posted a video on his website responding to the backlash, saying: “Do you think I am stupid enough to post a real photo of Miley not wearing any underwear? Sure I like to be controversial, but I don’t want to go to jail.

“Do you think Miley is that stupid to be out in public without panties?

“The reason I linked to that photo is because I thought she was exiting this car in a very unladylike fashion. People, snap out of it!”

Asked about the incident Miley told US radio host Ryan Seacrest: “Isn’t it funny that things like that, that are so negative, have to come out right before my record? It’s like no one can let positive things happen. All I do is focus on the positive, and I hope this record does well.”

Bosses behind the hit Twilight films have taken legal action against a clothing company after the firm began selling jackets just like the one worn by Kristen Stewart in the first movie.

The coat first came to attention when the picture’s costume designer, Wendy Chuck, claimed she made a last minute dash to Nordstrom and picked out the BB Dakota item to be worn by Stewart’s character Bella Swan in 2008′s Twilight.

Executives at BB Dakota subsequently began marketing the blue cotton coat emphasising the item’s link to the vampire franchise, using the line, “Bella Swann (sic) wears this jacket in Twilight and scores the hottest vampire in high school, and so can you!”

But the advertising ploy has riled bosses at Summit Entertainment, the studio behind the Twilight films, and they filed a lawsuit against the clothing company on Friday claiming copyright and trademark infringement.

The lawsuit seeks an injunction against further sale of the item and demands BB Dakota bosses turn over all profits earned from the sales.

Film bosses also want the clothing firm to “deliver to Summit for destruction all Bella Jackets,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Landslides triggered by heavy rain in southeast Bangladesh have buried dozens of homes and an army camp, killing at least 58 people.

The landslides hit villages in the Cox’s Bazar hill and resort district, where officials said they recorded 25 cm of rainfall within 24 hours.

Among the dead were at least six soldiers camping on a hillside at Himchhari and four other army soldiers are missing.

Their colleagues joining rescue workers searching for bodies that may be buried under the mud.

Football pundit Robbie Earle admitted he might have been “naive” after World Cup tickets allocated to him were found to have been used for “unauthorised purposes”.

ITV fired him and said a “substantial number” of tickets, which were for Earle’s friends and family, had been passed to a “third party”.

Earle, an ITV pundit since 2002, said: “Call me naive but I didn’t think I was doing anything wrong. I hope when people hear the full story they will see me in a different light.”

The incident relates to claims that a group of women at the Holland-Denmark match at the tournament in South Africa were involved in a marketing stunt.

The group of 36, all wearing orange mini-dresses, were ejected from the game when Fifa bosses accused them of wearing the outfits to promote a brand of beer which was not one of the official sponsors.

The practice is known as “ambush marketing”. Members of the group were found to have tickets in their possession and it is understood they were part of Earle’s allocation.

The actress, who has been playing Steph Cunningham in the soap since 2000, said: “Leaving ‘Hollyoaks’ is one of the most difficult decisions I have ever made.

“It has been my dream job for 10 years and I shall miss all of the fantastic friends I have made in the cast and crew. I am very sad to leave but I’m ready for new challenges and I’m looking forward to pursuing a career in musical theatre.”

Carley’s on-screen character, who has recently been diagnosed with cervical cancer, is to bow out from the soap at Christmas.

It isn’t clear yet whether Steph’s exit will have anything to do with her battle against the disease.

The dresses were made by Bavaria beer and despite the outfits containing no branding, the organisers said it was against their rules on “ambush marketing”.

“It’s a nice dress. Very fashionable. In my opinion, people should have the right to wear whatever they want,” Peer Swinkels, from Bavaria beer, told South African newspaper The Star.

“We launched the orange item on April 30 on the Queen’s birthday, which we call Queen’s Day. The Dutch people are a little crazy about orange and we wear it on public holidays and events like the World Cup.”

Barbara Kastein, who was wearing the dress, explained what happened: “We were sitting near the front, making a lot of noise, and the cameras kept focusing on us. We were singing songs and having a good time.

“In the second half, about 40 stewards surrounded us and forced us to leave the stadium. They pushed us up the stairs, and one of the girls fell.

“The police came and kept on asking us the same questions over and over, asking if we worked for Bavaria. They said we were ambush-marketing and it was against the law in South Africa. They said we would be arrested and would stay in jail for six months. Girls were crying. It was bad.”

After a few hours questioning all the girls were released although Kastein said that the police took a copy of her passport and told her they would investigate the matter further.

A few flags were also confiscated during the Group E match at Soccer City as part of FIFA’s plan to protect its World Cup brands.

FIFA also removed flags emblazoned with company logos during Sunday’s Group D match between Ghana and Serbia at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria.

A young Scottish woman has spoken of her relief to be reunited with her family after a 10-year ordeal as a hostage in Pakistan.

Naheeda Bi, 28, was kidnapped by two men at Islamabad Airport in April 2000 as she was returning to Scotland on her own from a visit to relatives in Pakistan, it was reported on Tuesday.

She was initially held in a dark windowless room for at least two months, as her captors discussed a ransom. The young woman was then moved by truck to buildings in the desert, where she met her uncle Masood who had also been kidnapped at the airport. Talk of a ransom ceased and she was put in a room with around 20 other captives, who were forced to work making munitions.

She told a newspaper: “They treated us badly. People would be dragged by the hair from one place to another, they would be verbally abused and beaten.”

Many of the captives were sickly and Ms Bi herself also fell ill, suffering from vomiting and diarrhoea in the unsanitary conditions.

Her head was also shaved by her captors, and when she was first kidnapped they sedated her by injecting tranquillisers into her feet.

Over the course of the 10 years she was moved between four different camps, occasionally seeing her uncle who was also still a captive.

However three weeks ago she was suddenly handed a phone and heard her mother Rabia’s voice on the other end of the line. A few days later she and her uncle were blindfolded and put in a truck with some others, then driven to a remote area in the Punjab where they were dropped off.

They made their way to the city of Chakwal, a city near Islamabad and called Rabia, and she was reunited with her mother and father Akram in a hotel in a small town called Dina.

Now back in Glasgow, Ms Bi can hardly believe her ordeal is behind her. She told the newspaper: “Every day I used to think could be my last and some days I wished that it was over. I still cannot believe my hell is over. When I wake up, I look around the room twice. Just to make sure that I am really here.”

Former England midfielder Paul Gascoigne is recovering in hospital after being involved in a car accident in which a female driver was arrested on suspicion of being over the drink limit.

Gascoigne is sitting up in bed and talking with visitors but is not expected to be discharged, a hospital spokesman told PA.

The 43-year-old was injured after the vehicle he was travelling in left the road and hit a post on Sunday evening.

The 36-year-old female driver of the Vauxhall Astra and two male passengers were taken to hospital suffering non-life threatening injuries.

A Newcastle General Hospital spokesman described Gascoigne’s condition as “comfortable”.

He said: “He’s not badly hurt; he’s sitting up in bed and chatting and laughing with visitors. He’s in a comfortable condition and I expect will be with us for a few more days.”

Gascoigne, whose problems with alcoholism and mental illness have been widely covered in the media since his retirement from the game, played for clubs including Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Middlesbrough, Rangers and Italy’s Lazio.

He famously cried after being booked in the 1990 World Cup semi-final against West Germany, a punishment which would have ruled him out of the final if England had won a match they eventually lost in a penalty shoot-out.

Launching the iPhone 4 at Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, CEO Steve Jobs apparently struggled because of audience wi-fi active devices.

“We’re having a little problem here. I don’t know what is wrong with our networks,” Mr Jobs said, as the huge projected image of his iPhone stayed resolutely blank.

Mr Jobs admitted that the venue was known to be a wi-fi bad spot, before pleading for audience members to switch their devices off.

“You know you can help me out if you are on wi-fi, you could just get off, I’d appreciate it,” Jobs said to the crowd.

Having failed to show a website on the phone’s display as it sat alongside an existing iPhone model, Jobs attempted Plan B for the new phone.

“We going to switch over to some backups here, I have a feeling we might have the same problem,” he said.

After starting the backup, it gave an error message, “Could not activate cellular data network,” to laughs from the crowd.

Mr Jobs clicked the error message but another then appeared, “Could not open page”, to more laughs.

“Well, jeez, i don’t like this,” Mr Jobs said.

Attempting to revert to the “primary” phone he had been using, Mr Jobs said: “I’m afraid I have a problem and I’m not going to be able to show you much today.”

Mr Jobs then showed several photos on the high definition display of the new phone before a third attempt to access a network also failed.

“Well, I’m sorry guys, I don’t know what is going on,” Jobs said to some jeers from the audience.

Apple’s product unveilings are usually renowned for a lack of technical glitches, however Jobs had to resort to yelling to Scott Forstall, the vice president of iPhone software, for help.

“Scott, you got any suggestions?” Jobs pleaded.

Someone in the crowd then yelled out “Verizon” – a dig at Apple for not offering the new phone through America’s biggest mobile service provider.

“We’re going to hope things get fixed before my next demo here. Thanks,” Mr Jobs said as he walked offstage.

Features of the new phone include two cameras with an inbuilt flash, wi-fi video conferencing facilities, uprated battery and motion-sensing gyroscope for game usage.
